WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service announced recently on its website that it is hiring armed special agents throughout the nation.
According to a job posting on the IRS website, the tax collecting agency is in heat to hire special agents who are authorized to carry guns and make arrests throughout the country. This means they would be allowed to deadly force if required
IRS special agents of the Criminal Investigation division are the only IRS agents authorized by law to carry and use firearms. The Criminal Investigation division investigates financial crimes, money laundering, and tax-related identity theft.
The IRS job post states under the “major duties” section that special agents are authorized to carry “. . . a firearm; must be prepared to protect him/herself or others from physical attacks at any time and without warning and use firearms in life-threatening situations; must be willing to use force up to and including the use of deadly force.”
Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Danny Werfel claimed on Thursday that the agency will not hire any “armed” auditors with the recent $80 billion in new funding granted by Congress. Some Republican lawmakers have said that the IRS intends to form an armed force of 87,000 IRS agents.
