CHICAGO – United Airlines announced Monday that it has implemented an improved family seating policy that eases restrictions to allow children under 12-years of age to sit next to an adult in their party for free.
According to United the new policy is made possible through a new seat map feature that “dynamically” finds available adjacent seats at the time of booking. The new seat map feature first reviews all available free Economy seats and then opens complimentary upgrades to available Preferred Seats.
Paying passengers traveling with children under the age of 12 will begin to see more adjacent seat options immediately as the policy is implemented over the coming month. The new policy is expected to go into effect in March.
United did state that United Polaris®, United First Class®, and Economy Plus® seats are excluded from the new seating policy.
