CHICAGO – A mother was awarded $20 million by a Cook County Jury after they sided with her in a case that claimed an area hospital was negligent during the birth of her child causing severe brain damage.
On Friday after a three-week trial at the Daley Center, a jury found that Advocate Christ Hospital staff involved in the 2014 birth of Bonita Johnson’s baby missed signs that the infant was in danger during the birth at the Oak Lawn medical center. The jury found the hospital negligent in eight out of nine counts charged. However, the doctor who performed the Caesarian section was not held liable.
“Our hearts go out to this family. We are committed to providing the best care to all patients. While we are disappointed with the verdict, our focus remains on high-quality care.” Kathryn McDonough, spokesman for Advocate Health.
