CHICAGO — On December 13, 1951, Chicago’s classical radio station went on the air for the first time, with Bernard Jacobs as engineer and Rita Jacobs as announcer. WFMT continues to be a champion of classical music in Chicago seventy years later after the sale of WNIB in 2000. WFMT will broadcast live from Northeastern Illinois University’s Jewel Box Recital Hall on Monday as part of the anniversary celebration. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, listen to 98.7FM, wfmt.com, the WFMT app, or WFMT Facebook.
