EDWARDSVILLE, IL – It has been confirmed that several Amazon workers have died after an Amazon warehouse roof collapsed as a result of severe weather in the Edwardsville area on Friday night.  There are also several workers trapped in the collapsed building.

According to the Edwardsville Police Department, the collapse occurred Friday around 8:33 p.m. at the warehouse near I-270 and Illinois Route 111.

Because of the size of the building, Mike Fillback, the department’s public information officer, said rescue efforts could last until Saturday morning.

Some workers who escaped the collapse on their own were transported to a safe location with the assistance of the Madison County Transit Department.

“We were able to transport them to a safe location, reunite them with loved ones, or get them help . . . We’re still trying to figure out if there are any other people in the building and how to get through the debris to get them help.” Fillback said in a statement.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker stated that the Illinois State Police and disaster officials were coordinating with local officials in Edwardsville, and that he was monitoring the situation.
