India’s Chief Of Defense Staff Confirmed Dead In Crash

NEW DELHI — General Bipin Rawat and 12 others were killed in a helicopter crash in southern India, only one survivor rescued.

Rawat, his wife, and others were aboard an Indian Air Force Mi-17V5 helicopter when it crashed on Wednesday in Cooonoor, Tamil Nadu.

The single survivor has been identified as Group Captain Varun Singh, who works at the Defense Services Staff College in Wellington.

Rawat served as the chairman of the chiefs of staff committee and continued as India’s first chief of defense staff.  Previously, the four-star general served as head of the army staff.
