Chinatown: Man Fatally Shot

CHICAGO — A 71-year-old man was shot and killed near an elementary school in the Chinatown neighborhood on Tuesday.

According to Chicago police, the victim was shot around 12:30 p.m. while walking down the sidewalk across the street from Haines Elementary School in the 200 block of West 23rd Place.

According to witnesses, 13 shots rang out sending students screaming and running into the school, which later went on lockdown for the remainder of the afternoon.

According to CPD, a silver-colored vehicle passing by opened fire, striking the victim.  The shooter then exited the vehicle and opened fire again.  The victim was taken to an aera hospital and pronounced dead.

One suspect is in custody.  The suspect was arrested at Jackson Boulevard and the Kennedy Expressway.
