INDIA – In stunning news, several Amazon India executives have been charged in connection with a marijuana smuggling ring in India.
The yet to be named Amazon India executives have been charged under India’s narcotics law, in the Indian central state of Madhya Pradesh. Officials have also yet to release the number of top executives charged.
On November 14, police arrested two men with 20kg of marijuana, claiming the men had founded a company, Babu Tex, that was registered as a vendor with Amazon. The company was then allegedly used for smuggling marijuana disguised as stevia leaves to other parts of India.
Authorities also stated that senior executives of Amazon India were named as suspects under the country’s drug legislation due to discrepancies in the corporation’s responses to police questions and facts discovered during discussions.
“In light of the similarities between the facts revealed in the investigation and the answers provided by Amazon via documents. The executive directors of Amazon India have been made the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.” according to a statement from police.
According to police, nearly 1,000kg of marijuana worth approximately $148,000 was sold on Amazon.
The US company issued a statement shortly after the allegations surfaced, stating that listing and selling legally prohibited products is not permitted on Amazon’s portals.
