MOSCOW — A potential new Russian fighter plane will be unveiled during a Moscow air show that begins next week, according to Russian aviation manufacturers.

The new warplane was observed at an airstrip in Zhukovsky, outside of Moscow, where the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Salon opens Tuesday.  According to Kremlin sources, the new jet was developed as part of a program to produce a light tactical fighter by the Sukhoi aircraft manufacturer.

The new unnamed aircraft, unlike Russia’s latest Su-57 two-engine stealth fighter, is smaller and has only one engine.  The new Russian warplane looks to be aimed at the United States’ F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, which entered service in 2015.  Russia plans to sell the new planes to overseas customers in the future.

After Russia’s [Soviet Union] 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, accusations of Russian interference in elections, hacking attacks, and other diabolical plans of world domination, the Kremlin has made modernization of the country’s armed forces a top priority amid a bitter strain in relations with the West, which have sunk to post-Cold War lows.
