CHICAGO – Mayor Lori Lightfoot is setting up a $1 million prize fund to try to remove firearms off city streets.
Lightfoot said at a press conference on Thursday that Chicago is seeing too much carnage, trauma, and funerals, in part due to the presence of too many illegal guns on the streets.
Mayor Lightfoot established a $1 million prize fund for information leading to the confiscation of illegal firearms. She believes that it will require a “village” to combat Chicago’s continuous bloodshed.
This year has been the deadliest in almost a decade, Chicago cops have seized 6,300 illegal firearms so far this year with a total of 12,000 expected by the end of 2021.
Mayor Lightfoot thinks that this million-dollar “investment” would encourage people and community leaders to speak out. The fund’s specific specifications are scheduled to be published in the coming days.
