CHICAGO — When Newsmax reporter William Kelly approached Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot about uncontrolled violence sweeping the city on Friday evening, tempers flared.
More than 300 people have been shot and murdered in Chicago this year, according to statistics.
Over 1,500 people have been shot and injured. When Kelly probed Lightfoot on the increase in violent crime, the mayor said he misunderstood the facts.
Lightfoot declined federal aid that was offered by former president Trump but is now seeking aid from from the Biden administration which recently committed to assist Chicago and other major cities that have been struck hard by an increase in lethal gun crime. He stated that the Justice Department will form a new strike team to assist local law enforcement in stemming the flow of illegal firearms.
Mayor Lightfoot, who promised to curb Chicago’s lethal street violence, stated on Monday that this month has been less violent than June of last year. Yet this does not deny the fact that 2021 has been Chicago’s deadliest year in over a decade.
The world watched in horror this past weekend as video from Humboldt Park showed two people involved in a minor automobile accident suddenly mobbed and shot execution-style.
